Initial Observation of New Wortley

New Wortley is a deprived area of Leeds, located just 2 miles from the city center.

The tower blocks are the first thing you see when you arrive in New Wortley. They are so prominent and easily seen from every point in the area that you can use them as orientation marks.

Walking around you can find some historic buildings dating back to Victorian times.

The heart of New Wortley is the Community Centre due to its significant impact on people`s everyday live. It is contrasting with what is around and catch pedestrians` eyes immediately.

High timber and metal fences are frequently seen in the neighborhood. Every house is hidden behind high fencing and the atmosphere they create is really depressing.

The New Wortley Cemetery and HM Prison contribute to more depressive feeling in the area with their high stone walls.

Walking around the area I have noticed that there are a few green spaces but they are not utilized well. They are not attractive for the local people due to the lack of siting areas, playgrounds etc.
